WALTER KITUNDU
(SHOW INTRO)
The turntable was my first instrument. It naturally became a lens through which I viewed the world. In attempting to expand its musical vocabulary, I found that it complimented and contributed to a range of other interests and investigations. Anything that turned, spun, fell, flew, sounded, or decayed was filtered through the turntable often resulting in new insights or forms.
I've made hand built turntables that interact with the wind and rain, fire and earthquakes, birds, light, and the force of ocean waves. I created a new instrument family called Phonoharps which are multi-stringed instruments made from record players and rely on the turntable's sensitivity to vibration. I have been fortunate to perform in venues from Carnegie Hall to a high school library in Egilstaadir, Iceland and been granted residencies at art centers and science museums internationally.
Currently I'm working as a Multimedia Artist at the Exploratorium museum of Science, Art, and Perception. I'm very grateful to have received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2008. It has given me a chance to pursue bird photography and return to music at a measured pace. I truly appreciate your interest and thank you for visiting this site.
